Let's stand in solidarity with our neighbors and support the call for "no work, no school, no shopping" as the Twin Cities showed us last Friday when people from all walks of life came together and showed us and the whole country the way forward, together.
We are joining the national day of action to say ICE OUT OF EVERYWHERE! A rally will be held Friday, January 30 at 2pm at the Charles R Jonas Federal Building on Trade St to demand accountability for the atrocities committed by CBP/ICE agents against immigrants and those peacefully supporting them. We will demand an end to kidnapping, killing, and the war on our fundamental human and Constitutional rights!

Join Indivisible Charlotte as we march in Charlotte’s MLK Jr Parade!
REGISTER FOR MLK JR. CLT PARADE
WHAT: Charlotte is hosting its annual MLK Jr Parade with over 100 participating organizations. This will be our first year marching in the parade, and we want you to join us!
WHEN: Saturday, January 17. Please arrive by 9:00 AM. The parade will kick off at 9:30 AM.
PARADE ROUTE: The parade will march down Tryon Street, beginning at 8th Street, and ending at 3rd Street (~.80 miles).
MEETING SPOT: Our position in the parade is 50B. We will meet underneath the 2nd bridge over Tryon - 898 N Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28206 - to kick off the parade. We will then continue to The Green - 425 S Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28202 - at the end of the parade to gather all signs, banners, & flags.
BRING: You only need to bring yourself! Banners, signs, & flags will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Please do not bring your own signs.
ATTIRE: Wear your Indivisible t-shirt & comfortable walking shoes, and dress for the weather!
IMPORTANT INFO:
There will be some porta-potties at the beginning and end of the parade route.
Businesses will be open as usual, so please do not block any entrances, parking lots, or accessible spots.
Parking is not provided by the parade organizers. We recommend carpooling, ride sharing, and using public transit to make things easier.
All event staff will be in black, neon yellow, or neon orange vests that clearly indicate they are with the MLK parade.

Please join us for an inspiring discussion with Joyce Vance, author of Giving Up is Unforgivable: A Manual for Keeping Democracy. Joyce is a former U.S. Attorney, a legal analyst on several well-known podcasts, Cafe Insider and #SistersInLaw, and on MS NOW. She writes the Substack Civil Discourse with Joyce Vance, which has over 600K subscribers.
We will discuss Joyce’s book as well as current political events. We will be giving away copies of her book randomly to a select few who attend the Live Podcast event. If you’re worried about the state of our democracy, join us to get the legal knowledge and analysis you need to be an informed and “In The Know” advocate.
Wednesday, January 7th, an American citizen was killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This killing is part of a broader pattern of unchecked violence, impunity, and abuse carried out by federal immigration enforcement agencies against members of our communities.
A broad coalition of groups across the country and locally are calling for a coordinated Ice Out For Good Weekend of Action to demand accountability, honor the life lost, and make visible the human cost of ICE’s actions.

A core principle behind all ICE Out For Good events is a commitment to nonviolent action and no civil disobedience. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values, and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.
Suggested parking for First Ward Park is the 7th Street Station Parking Garage and light rail use is encouraged. We recommend that you bring water, snacks and other items you may need for your safety/comfort in the cooler weather for this vigil. We will have some resources available for emergent needs. March to follow led by Seeking Justice Charlotte and PSL for those who wish to participate.

Please bring signs or other props for attention. Profanity and use of hate symbols (crossed out swastikas) are discouraged. No metal poles are permitted in NC and wooden flag poles must be under 40 inches in length. Masks are only permitted for medical concerns.

Although the Bette Rae Center is funded by Mecklenburg County, many needs are not being met. There is a great need within the Senior Citizen's program. Mutual Aid has been delivering snacks and beverages to the 40+individuals that show up everyday day. But there's more! Supplies are meek for most of the programming so they depend on donations, which are few. They also need a handful of volunteers throughout the week. Now through the end of February programming consists of sewing and crochet lessons. At the end of February, a Fashion Show has been scheduled to show off the clothes they have made during these 2 months....and it will be so much fun. I hope you will plan to attend!
CURRENT NEEDS: Fabric (yardage and scraps), sewing supplies, crochet needles and yarn; and volunteers to help with these projects.

The next delivery date is January 14th. Please bring donations, if possible to the Social on January 7th at SupperClub SouthEnd. A member of the Mutual Aid Team will assist you upon entrance. Other donations can be dropped off with one of our Neighborhood Organizers before 10am on Wednesday, January 14th.

While we continue stocking the Freedom Fridge, I'm happy to announce we are officially supporting two new projects within the Enderly Park community.
The Enderly Park Collective is a vibrant network of local entrepreneurs, creatives, and changemakers in Enderly Park. They are a coalition of business owners and community leaders who believe in putting the unity back in the community. Through collaborative engagement, inclusive programming, and hands-on service, they are working to rebuild a thriving ecosystem that connects businesses with neighbors in meaningful, lasting ways. The collective hosts events that bring joy and resources to the neighbors such as National Night Out, seasonal celebrations, community cleanups, and signature experiences reflect the heart of Enderly Park. Their goal is to foster trust, pride, and opportunity by bridging the gap between local businesses and the families that are served.
One of the organizations within The Collective is The Fatherhood Empowerment Network which hosted the annual SHARE THE SMILES TOY GIVEAWAY for Christmas. Mutual Aid was there to assist with set up, and to provide cookies and hot chocolate...and YOU helped by donating toys. The number of neighbors attending was not expected! Last year, 215 people attended and this year over 900 people showed up. Unfortunately, there were not enough gifts to go through 3 times as in past years, so the children were allowed only one toy each. These families spent hours waiting in line for just one toy. Does that prove to you how much Mutual Aid is needed in their lives?

By establishing this network, ICLT aims to create a grassroots support system that can respond quickly and effectively to the needs of these communities, which may be at increased risk due to current political policies and rhetoric. The project reflects ICLT's commitment to defending democracy and protecting the rights of marginalized groups in the face of potential threats to civil liberties and social programs.
Our first project of the year from Postcards to Swing States called "Informed Voters of America" postcards are available to be picked up starting Friday, January 2nd. They are at 17 different homes all around Mecklenburg County, plus Union, Cabarrus, Gaston and Stanly Counties too. They are in bundles of 50 and we need you to write them, supply the postage and mail them ON FEBRUARY 18th.
If you have already signed up to be a postcard writer you should receive an email with more specific instructions including the list of pick-up sites by January 4th. If you have not received that email titled "FIRST 2026 POSTCARD PROJECT" by the 5th (check your JUNK file) then complete the survey here and we'll add you to the list and send you the instructions. If you'd like to learn more about this project and postcard writing in general go to turnoutpac.org/postcards-faq. We will be doing their larger "Get Out The Vote" project for North Carolina beginning in May.
In case you need to be reassured of the value of writing political postcards, here is a testimonial from newly elected Charlotte County Council member, Kimberly Owens who many of us helped with handwritten cards this fall. "Outreach by postcard may seem dated in this time of technology and constant communication, but I experienced the true power of personal connection in my race for Charlotte City Council. With 10,000 postcards written by hundreds of volunteers, connection to both my message and to each other came through at the polls. Countless voters greeted me with a "Hey, I wrote cards for you!' or a "I got a handwritten postcard from you!" Connections drives votes. And votes win races!!"
