Strategic Non-Cooperation to Fight Authoritarianism
Many of you have asked about Indivisible National’s latest campaign, One Million Rising, and how Indivisible Charlotte will engage with it. Given the urgency of this moment, we want to explain what the initiative is, how you can take part, and how ICLT will align with its goals.
What It IS -from Indivisible National:
Coming out of Hands Off and No Kings Day of Actions, millions have already mobilized against authoritarianism. Our next step is to pivot that momentum into mass, decentralized pressure that compels key institutions to defect from Trumpism. We have to strike while the iron is hot—before even more power locks in.
As part of the No Kings call to action, One Million Rising is a three-part series that includes virtual calls and trainings, and in-person gatherings. Our goal is to train one million people by having call attendees just like you host your own in person gatherings to facilitate a conversation with your community.
We are asking you to register private resistance gatherings in your local community, with a goal of having about 10 people within your network at your gathering - we know some will be smaller, and some will be bigger - and that’s okay!
To understand more deeply, please watch the first two trainings. Training 1 (July 16th), Training 2 (July 30th). The final training is Wed. Aug. 13th. Register for the third and final training here.

Your Role:
The One Million Rising trainings offer critical insights into the rise of authoritarianism and how organized non-cooperation can serve as a strategic response. Whether you’ve already joined the first two sessions or are hearing about this for the first time, we encourage you to watch the trainings, explore the resources, and consider hosting a Community Resistance Gathering. These gatherings are meant to be informal conversations—around 10 people in your network—to build understanding and readiness. Some may be smaller, others larger, but each one helps grow the resistance.
Indivisible Charlotte’s Role:
While Indivisible Charlotte will not be organizing Community Resistance Gatherings as official group events, we fully support members who choose to host them independently. Some of you already have gatherings in motion, and we’re excited to see this work expanding across our region.
We anticipate that Indivisible National and its partners will continue calling for broad-based mobilizations and high-impact resistance actions. Just as we helped coordinate No Kings, Hands Off, and Good Trouble Lives On, we will support those future efforts across the Charlotte area. ICLT leaders are participating in trainings alongside you and are available to answer questions or provide support.
At the same time, Indivisible Charlotte will continue to advance our core electoral work. While we support national efforts to build resistance through strategic non-cooperation, we also recognize that defending democracy requires sustained electoral engagement. In the weeks ahead, we will roll out our electoral goals, canvassing plans, and training opportunities to prepare for the critical races ahead. We cannot rely on a single approach. Grassroots resistance and strategic electoral action must move forward together to counter authoritarianism and build lasting power here in North Carolina and across our country.
